UN supports elections on schedule

KABUL (PAN): The United Nations on Sunday reiterated its strong support for holding presidential and provincial council elections on time and in accordance with the Afghan constitution.

The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) welcomed the assembly's approval of the law regulating the structure and responsibilities of electoral management bodies.

A statement from the UN mission called the law a key step toward establishing a robust electoral architecture for the 2014 polls, as committed to by Kabul in the Tokyo Mutual Accountability Framework.

While urging the rapid presidential endorsement and enactment of the law, NAMA stressed speedy implementation of the law, specifically the appointment of senior IEC officials.

“The establishment of the electoral dispute resolution mechanism is also crucial for ensuring transparent, credible and inclusive elections,” it added.

The assembly was asked to continue its efforts to finalise the electoral law, defining the legal framework of electoral processes and ensuring the full legal participation of all Afghans.

The mission reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the elections at the request of the Afghan authorities and institutions as mandated by the UN Security Council.
