PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Five police personnel were among nine people killed in a suicide attack on a police check-post in Pakistan’s eastern city of Lahore, officials said on Thursday.

The bomber blew himself up near the Raiwind Tableeghi Markaz after a policeman tried to prevent him from entering the centre where a bi-annual congregation was in progress.

Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the overnight bombing. In a statement to media outlets, the outlawed out threatened more attacks on police in retaliation for the killing of their “associates” in Punjab.

The massive explosion came when 70,000 Tablighi Jamaat followers were present at the centre, but they remained safe. People rushed to the site to help the victims.

Rescue teams, Edhi Ambulances and the locals shifted the injured to the Raiwind Tehsil Headquarters Hospital (THQ), Sharif Medical Complex and Indus Hospital.

Policemen Aslam, Tanveer, Saeed, Amir Afridi were among the dead. Raiwind police chief Zubair Nazir and nine other policemen were among the injured. They were evacuated to Jinnah Hospital.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Dr. Haider Ashraf said five of those cops, including two sub-inspectors, later succumbed to their injuries. Four civilians also lost their lives in the attack.

Rescue officials said the explosion occurred a few kilometres from the residence of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.
