KABUL (Pajhwok): Hundreds of drug addicts were collected from various areas in Kabul and handed them over to a treatment center on Monday, an official said.

Nasir Sharifi, an official at the Ministry of Counternarcotics, told Pajhwok Afghan News that some 300 addicts were taken to the treatment center.

He said force was used in taking some addicts to the treatment facility from different areas of the 6th police district of Kabul.

Some addicts were unwilling to be treated but they later agreed after being nicely behaved with. They were shifted to Pul-i-Charkhi rehabilitation center in ambulances.

The addicts would undergo a 45-day to two months treatment course. In the past two years, around 19, 000 addicts had been rehabilitated so far, he concluded.

Qurban Ali, 30, who has been using drugs for the past five years, said: “This is my fourth time going to a rehab center to quit the habit, but each time I returned back to the old habit”.

He believed only treatment could not help the addicts say goodbye to addiction and asked the government to give jobs and some specific places for living to the addicted individuals.

Ali Raza, another addict, said: “We don’t have bread and house, at least the government should allow us to live here in Puli Sukhta ( a neighborhood of Kabul)”.

He said: “I returned to the habit of consuming drug after first time treatment because of social problems”.
