Taliban raids leave 17 security personnel dead in Takhar

TALOQAN (Pajhwok):  Seven Afghan National Army troops and ten Afghan local policemen were killed in Taliban attacks in the Khwaja Ghar district of northeastern Takhar province last night, an official said.

Another four ANA soldiers and nine local police were wounded in the attacks, said Takhar police spokesman Col. Abdul Khel Aseer.

He said first the Taliban attacked the ANA base in Pul-i-Momin area of the district at about 8pm, sparking a gun-battle. Meanwhile local police from Ghor Tapa area were on their way to assist the under attack troops, but the police were ambushed by the Taliban in an area between Gor Tapa and Momin Pul.

Ten local policemen including two commanders were killed and nine others were wounded in the ambush and seven troops were killed and four others wounded in the base attack.

Khwaja Ghar district chief Mohammad Omar said the clashes between security forces and the insurgents continued until 3am with the rebels briefly capturing Gor Tapa and Monin Pul areas.

Police spokesman Col. Aseer said the attackers had come from Dasht-i-Archi district of northern Kunduz province.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said 12 posts were captured and 29 security forces were killed and eight others wounded in the last night attacks in Khwaja Ghar district.
