Mualvi Haqqani killed by regional intelligence: Muslimyar

Mualvi Haqqani killed by regional intelligence: Muslimyar

Mar 08, 2018 - 19:29

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): The Meshrano Jirga or upper house chairman on Thursday claimed regional intelligence was behind the suicide attack that killed Mualvi Abdul Zahir Haqqani, the Hajj and Religious Affairs director for eastern Nangarhar province.

Haqqani was killed along with his driver in a suicide attack in Jalalabad city on Wednesday. He was laid to rest in his own village in Hijrat area of Surkhrod district on Thursday.

Talking to the funeral ceremony of Mualvi Abdul Zahir Haqqani in Jalalabad, Meshrano Jirga chairman Abdul Hadi Muslimyar said that the Afghans did not fear such attacks and they would always defend their country.

The ceremony was also attended by a number of advisors to the president, Meshrano Jirga members, deputy Hajj and Religious Affairs minister, High Peace Council (HPC) members, local officials, ulema, civil society activists and other people.

Muslimyar said the death of Zahir Haqqani, who always raised his voice in support of Afghan security forces, was a great loss for Afghanistan.

Haqqani was a strong supporter of the Afghan forces and the government -- the reason he became victim of the regional intelligence, the Senate chairman believed.

On the other hand, Qazi Mohammad Amin Weqad, a HPC member, urged militants not to kill their own people to please the enemies of Afghanistan.

He said Zahir Haqqani was killed for his courageous speeches and support for the government.

Mualvi Qamaruddin Shinwari, president’s advisor on tribal affairs, read out a message from the president at the ceremony. The president said that the death of Zahir Haqqani was a great loss for the Afghan government, people and society.

Nangarhar Governor Mohammad Gulab Mangal also called on the militants to understand that truth and unity would not become silent by killing Zahir Haqqani.

“There are a large number of Islamic figures who would follow the Zahir Haqqani way and would stand for their government and security forces”, he said.

Mualvi Mohammad Munib, deputy Hajj and religious affairs minister, said that Zahir Haqqani was a great Islamic scholar and jihadi figure.

He said that Zahir Haqqani was serving as the Hajj and Religious Affairs director for Nangarhar and headed the Harakat-i-Inqilab Islami Afghanistan party.

Zahir Haqqani had served as a teacher in his own area between 1993 and 1997. During the Taliban regime, he was deputy head of military corps in eastern Herat province. After the fall of the Taliban regime, he built and managed his own seminary school.

However, he usually gave speeches against Daesh or Islamic State (IS) after the group’s emergence in Nangarhar province. He was appointed as Hajj and Religious Affairs director of Nangarhar two years back.

Last year, Zahir Haqqani survived a suicide attack that killed his brother.
