KABUL (Pajhwok): Fourteen people, including a woman, have been arrested in connection with drug smuggling and their cases referred to the Criminal Justice Task Force (CJTF).

A statement from the CJTF said on Wednesday police detained the alleged drug smugglers in Kabul, Herat, Parwan, Nangarhar, Badghis and Jawzjan provinces.

More than 21 kilograms of heroin, 700 grams of morphine, 418 kg of opium, nearly 233 kg of hashish, 105 kg of chemicals, 190 litres of wine and 300 litres of alcoholic drinks were seized from them.

According to the statement, the security personnel also recovered 84,000 afghanis, $400, 7,500 Indian rupees and Iranian currency from the detainees.

In addition, the task force added, three weapons, eight vehicles, 17 mobile phones and 155 bullets were recovered from the alleged smugglers.

Five of the detainees tried to smuggle heroin from the Hamid Karza International Airport in Kabul to India.

The CJTF’s primary court sentenced eight smugglers from two and half year to 20 years in prison while the appellant court awarded six accused different jail terms.
