KABUL (Pajhwok) The Ministry of Higher Education on Sunday started for the first time in one and a half decades the process of issuing diplomas to thousands of private university graduates.

Higher Education Minister Khawja Najibullah Omeri, talking to students at a graduation ceremony, said for the first time diplomas were being distributed to graduate students who had completed their courses.

He said as per the rules of the Ministry of Higher Education, students who had completed their studies successfully reserved the right to get diplomas from public and private universities.

Omeri said in 16 years numerous private universities emerged and their number reached 131 offering education in 431 faculties  and 990 departments.  The minister said they would train professionals because the country needed them.

Officials of thte ministry of higher education asked universities to conform with international norms.

Mohammad Amir Kamawal, chief of private universities in the ministry of higher education, said they had delivered on their promise of no difference between private and government universities.

He asked private universities to improve quality of higher education and compete with universities of the region to stop Afghans from going abroad for education.

At the end, higher education ministry officials thanked private universities for distribution of diplomas and considered it as an important step.

The distribution of diplomas will increase importance of private universities and will improve quality of higher education.
