Poliovirus found in Kunar’s sewers, says official

Poliovirus found in Kunar’s sewers, says official

Feb 01, 2018 - 16:21

ASADABAD (Pajhwok): Poliovirus has been found in sewers of some areas in Asadabad, the capital of eastern Kunar province, an official said on Thursday.

Provincial public health official Dr. Mohammad Ishaq told Pajhwok Afghan News the return of refugees from Pakistan and security threats in some districts of Kunar continued to pose a major challenge to eliminating the deadly virus.

He said poliovirus was found in sewers passing through Asadabad. “The surface water falls in the main river of Kunar and many households use that water.”

Dr Ishaq added they were trying to eliminate the virus. “Last month, we took a sample for examination from the area sewage and the result was positive.”

The public health director said only anti-polio vaccination was the solution but many children had been missed out in vaccination drives due to security concerns in the province.

According to Dr. Ishaq, 13 types of vaccines are being given to people free of cost against approximately 10 fatal diseases.

Kunar Ulema Council member Mualvi Najibullah Haqyar recommended all families to give vaccines to their children against fatal diseases.
