KABUL (Pajhwok): Eighteen people, including two Kabul airport officials, have been arrested over drug smuggling charges in the past one week, the Criminal Justice Task Force (CJTF) said on Wednesday.

A CJTF statement said the alleged smugglers had been arrested by police in Kabul, Herat, Ghor, Parwan, Nangarhar, Balkh, Jawzjan and Faryab provinces.

The detainees included two public service members of the Hamid Karzai International Airport. The two have been accused of trying to smuggle drugs to India.

More than 131 kilograms of heroin, 823 kilograms of opium, more than 369 kilograms of hashish, 122 liters of acid, 205 liters of alcoholic beverages were recovered from the accused.

About 24,800 afghanis, 300 US dollars, 3,000 Indian rupees, one weapon, 64 bullets, three hand grenades, 19 mobile phone sets and eight vehicles have been confiscated from the detainees.

Their cases were being investigated at CJTF, the statement said, adding the primary court had sentenced three smugglers to jail terms from three and a half years to 16 years. Five others were sentenced to different punishment.
