11 soldiers killed, 16 injured in military academy attack

KABUL (Pajhwok): Eleven Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers and four suicide bombers were killed during rebels’ armed attack on Marshal Fahim Military Academy in Kabul early on Monday, an official said.

Ministry of Defense spokesman Gen. Dawlat Waziri told Pajhwok Afghan New four suicide attackers stormed the 111th military corps unit at around 5:00am in the Gargha a locality of Kabul.

He said gun battle ended with eleven security officials and four suicide bombers killed. One of the assailants was arrested. At least 16 security personnel were wounded.

Meanwhile, Ministry of Public Health spokesman Wahid Majrooh said the area had been blocked off. He said he had no information about the exact number of causalities. Ambulances have reached the scene.

It was the third major attack in the capital in less than 10 days, with a devastating suicide bombing at a security checkpoint killing more than 100 people on Saturday.

Nine days back, a Taliban-claimed attack on the Intercontinental Hotel killed at least 22 people, including 14 foreigners. Nine Ukrainians and four Americans were among the fatalities.

Fifteen cadets had been killed in October 2017 when the bus they were travelling in was struck by a Taliban suicide bomber.
