Jan 24, 2018 - 18:26

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Construction work on a 40-meter wide 17- kilometer road has been started in eastern Nangarhar province, an official said on Wednesday.

Zabat Khan Mangal, the provincial public works director, told Pajhwok Afghan News the road, an Asian Development Bank funded project, would start from Kabul-Turkham highway in Surkhab locality of  Darunta area to Samarkhel district.

However, he had no information about the estimated cost and timescale of the road which he hoped would be extended to 25 kilometers completion of the full survey.

Mohammad Sidiqqui Tawlatzai,  Behsud district chief, said by constructing such roads, traffic hazards in Jalalabad would reduce and would add to the area beautify.

Ajmal Omar, a member of the provincial council, said the government should consider alternative plots for civilians whose houses would come under the project.

Imranullah, a civil society activist, said recently thousands of families displaced by the conflict in their areas had migrated to the city and many others had returned from Pakistan, increasing traffic rush.

He told Pajhwok such kind of roads must be constructed for controlling traffic snarls in the provincial capital.
