JALALABAD (Pajhwok): The residents of Dur Baba district in eastern Nangarhar province say they play a major role in keeping security of the town which they claim has been ignore by the government over the past 16 years.

Religious scholars and local elders during a gathering on Wednesday announced their support for the president and the current system but complained the government was paying no attention to the development of their district.

Provincial Revenue Department Head Abdullah Raqibi and other government officials attended the gathering.

Tribal elder Kaftar Khan said the residents of the district had unanimously agreed not to allow any armed group in the district to find foothold.

He said Dur Baba was the only stable district of Nangarhar but the main district road could not be asphalted so far.

Another tribal elder Qari Dastakhat said security of Dur Baba was better than the Presidential Palace but there were many problems in every department.

“The road is in a dilapidated condition, there is one clinic which is closed in the afternoon, schools are without buildings and the youth are jobless,” he said.

District Chief Haji Hamesha Gul said residents contributed fully to maintaining peace and stability in Dur Baba, adding there were no major steps taken in reconstruction.

He acknowledged no major projects had been implemented in health, education and reconstruction in the district during the past 16 years.

Subhanullah, an expert at the governor house, assured the elders of Dur Baba that their complaints would be conveyed to the concerned authorities.

Revenue Department Head Abdullah Raqibi said construction of the main road’s two lines measuring 24 kilometers would be soon kicked off in Dur Baba soon.

It is pertinent to mention that Governor Gulab Mangal recently visited the district and heard complaints of local people.
