14 water reservoirs completed in Samangan

AIBAK (Pajhwok): Construction work on 14 water reservoirs having the capacity to store 500 cubic meters water has been completed at a total cost of $12 million in northern Samangan province, an official said on Sunday.

Eng. Abdul Majid Khirkhwa, in charge of the National Horticulture Livestock Projects (NHLP), told Pajhwok Afghan News half of the project cost was paid by gardeners and the remaining half by the World Bank.

Three water reservoirs were constructed in Dara-i-Sauf Bala district, two in Khuram Sarbagh district, one in Hazrat Sultan district and eight in Aibak, the provincial capital, for irrigation of pepper and almond gardens.

Khirkhwa said farmers could irrigate their 200 acres of land each from the reservoirs at one time and if they stored the water during summer they could irrigate 1000 trees.

Haji Qutbudeen, one of the farmers, said the lack of water had been one of their major problems affecting orchards in Samangan.
