8 Daesh, 7 Taliban join peace process in Nangarhar

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Fifteen insurgents, more than half of them Daesh affiliates, have joined the peace process in eastern Nangarhar province, an official said on Wednesday/

The former fighters included eight Daesh or so-called Islamic State (IS) including one commander and seven Taliban militants including one commander, said Attaullah Khogyani, the governor’s spokesman.

He told Pajhwok Afghan News the reconciling militants also handed over their arms to National Directorate of security (NDS) personnel and promised work for their country’s development.

“The Daesh group was spearheaded by Commander Abdul Manan and the Taliban group by commander Faridullah, they renounced violence and joined the peace process,” he added.

He said the militants had been operating against government in Khogyani, Pachirawgam and Chaparhar districts.

During the ongoing year so far 166 militants including 44 Islamic State (IS) rebels had joined the peace reconciliation process in Nangarhar.

Commander Faridullah said: we received training in Pakistan and were active in the three districts.”

Since the peace reconciliation process started in the province, 861 armed men had joined the peace process.
