14 journalists killed in Afghanistan in 2017: NAI

14 journalists killed in Afghanistan in 2017: NAI

Dec 29, 2017 - 00:03

KABUL (Pajhwok):  Fourteen journalists were killed and 23 others wounded in separate incidents of violence in Afghanistan in 2017, a media advocacy group, NAI, said on Thursday.

NAI chief Abdul Mujib Khilwatgar told reporters here that more than 140 incidents of violence against journalists and media workers were recorded in the outgoing year, showing a 15 percent increase over last year’s 126 incidents.

Jamhoor news agency reporter Syed Mehdi Hussaini said the increasing violence against journalists was a matter of concern. He said media personnel played a key role in bridging the gap between the people and the government.

He said the government should take strong measures for protection of journalists.

NAI’s press conference coincided with a group attack on a media outlet and a culture centre in Kabul, leaving 41 dead and 89 wounded, including journalists.
