Wolesi Jirga welcomes UN’s decision on Jerusalem

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Wolesi Jirga on Saturday welcomed the United Nations (UN)’s overwhelming rejection of the United States’ declaration of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel as “a right decision.”

Two days back, in a serious diplomatic blow for Trump, the UN’s general assembly rejected his unilateral decision of recognizing Jerusalem as Israel capital. UN’s 128 members voted against Trump’s decision, nine in favor and 35 nations abstained from the voting.

Trump on December 6 announced he was recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, triggering an almost universal diplomatic backlash.

Trump also ordered the shifting of the US Embassy in Tel Aviv to the contested city of Jerusalem.

However, Islamic countries including Afghanistan rejected Trump’s decision that triggered protests in many parts of the world.

A number of Wolesi Jirga or lower house members of Afghanistan parliament on Saturday welcomed the UN’s decision on Jerusalem.

Ghulam Faroq Majroh, a lawmaker from western Herat province, thanked countries who voted against Trump’s decision in the UN.

He said the UN vote showed Jerusalem was the original home of Palestinians and Palestinians were right in their claim.

Kubra Mustafawi, a lawmaker from central Maidan Wardak province, who welcomed the UN’s decision called it a major victory for the Muslim world.

“The Muslim world and the UN had a major responsibility in this matter, fortunately the decision was right and just,” she said.

Khalilullah Shahidzada, another lawmaker from Herat province, appreciated Turkish president’s efforts about Jerusalem and welcomed the UN vote.

He asked the US president to respect the UN decision and take his decision back on Jerusalem.

Nazir Ahmad Ahmadzai, second deputy speaker, said he on behalf of the Afghanistan lower house appreciated the UN decision as a rightful act.
