Nimroz court sentences 3 men to death in trader’s murder

Nimroz court sentences 3 men to death in trader’s murder

Dec 21, 2017 - 23:40

ZARANJ (Pajhwok): The Primary Urban Court in southwestern Nimroz province on Thursday sentenced three men to death for kidnapping and killing a trader during an open judicial trial in the provincial capital.

However, there was no defense lawyer to represent the convicts. During the judicial session, first the prosecutor in the case presented his arguments against the accused. He said six individuals were suspected of killing Haji Mohammad Ewaz, a petroleum trader.

In reaction, the suspects rejected the prosecutor’s claims as baseless.

Assistant Judge Sayed Abdul Qayoum Kamali, the primary and appellate courts head in Nimroz, said six people had been accused of the murder; but due to lack of evidence, two of them were acquitted.

He said considering the evidence produced, the four other suspects were found guilty of killing the trader.

“Of them, three are awarded capital punishment and the fourth one is sentenced to five years in jail.” He further ruled the verdict wasn’t final and the convicts could challenge it in the appellate court.

Haji Mohammad Ewaz, a national trader in Nimroz, was kidnapped three months back and then killed.

Ghulam Rasoul Akrami, brother of the slain businessman, said: “I want to thank police for arresting the perpetrators. I want the court decision to be implemented as a consolation for me and other relatives and a lesson for others.”
