India welcomes US strategy decried by Russia & China

KABUL (Pajhwok): India has welcomed the Trump administration’s national security strategy, an approach vehemently rejected by China and Russia.

A spokesperson for India’s External Affairs Ministry said: "We appreciate the strategic importance given to India-US relationship in the new strategy...

“As two responsible democracies, India and the US share common objectives, including combating terrorism and promoting peace and security throughout the world.”

A close partnership between Delhi and Washington contributed to peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region, the spokesman said in a statement.

In the  National Security Strategy (NSS), the Trump administration described China and Russia as "revisionist powers" who want to shape a world antithetical to US values and interests.

On Tuesday, Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying urged the US to abandon its Cold War mentality and zero-sum game concept.

"China will resolutely safeguard its sovereignty, security and right to develop," she said. "No one should have the fantasy of expecting China to swallow the bitter fruit of harming its own interests."

Separately, a spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin told journalists that the document had a “clearly imperial nature” and demonstrated a reluctance to abandon the idea of a “unipolar world”.
