Gen. Yaftali stresses regional cooperation on battling terror

KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghan army chief Lt. Gen. Mohammad Sharif Yaftali has underlined the need for international and regional cooperation on combating the scourge of terrorism.

Speaking at a passing-out parade at the Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Gaya, a tourist attraction in Bihar state, he slammed Pakistan and commended India for the constructive role in Afghanistan.

While seeking strategic depth, Pakistan’s military establishment continued to use Afghan Taliban, he alleged, questioning the neighbour’s reluctance to help promote intra-Afghan peace negotiations.

The Times of India quoted him as saying that war and insecurity --inherently contagious -- did not remain confined to a certain geography or region.

Gen. Yaftali argued defeating terrorism in Afghanistan could contain the risk of menace spreading to other parts of the region. Stability in the region and the world was directly linked to peace Afghanistan, he said.

He hailed burgeoning Kabul-Delhi defence cooperation, including training of the Afghan security personnel. India's developmental assistance programme for Afghanistan stands at around $2 billion.
