635 unregistered religious seminaries in Balkh

635 unregistered religious seminaries in Balkh

Dec 08, 2017 - 15:37

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): As many as 635 unregistered religious seminaries have been operating in northern Balkh province, officials said on Friday.

Provincial Hajj and Auqaf Affairs official Maulvi Amaruddin said this while issuing registration certificates to 30 madaris during a gathering at the Hazrat Ali Mosque in Mazar-i-Sharif, the provincial capital.

The official said with registration of the 30 seminaries, the number of documented religious schools in Balkh reached 65.

Amaruddin said 635 seminaries were operating in Balkh without registration

Balkh Hajj and Islamic Affairs director Mohammad Danishjo said they had started the process of registering seminaries two years ago.

He said the registration process had been slow going due to the trust deficit between the government and seminaries.

However, he said they were trying to convince officials of religious schools that the registration was in their interest.

Meanwhile, religious scholars called registration of madaris with the government as beneficial to both sides.

Religious scholar Muhsin Danish said it was still feared the government opponents could exploit unregistered seminaries.
