Daesh not on run but recruiting in north, northeast: MPs

Daesh not on run but recruiting in north, northeast: MPs

Dec 05, 2017 - 17:05

KABUL (Pajhwok): Some Meshrano Jirga members on Tuesday expressed concern over what they claimed increasing footprint of Islamic State (IS) or Daesh militant group in north and northeastern Afghanistan.

The senators asked the Afghan government to act and stop the militant group from expanding its activities.

“Those who always claim Daesh is eliminated should know the group has been busy recruiting fighters in the north and northeastern parts of the country,” said Abdullah Qurlaq, a lawmaker from northern Kunduz province.

Speaking at today’s session of the upper house, Qurlaq said Daesh group headed by Umar Mohajir was recruiting in Jawzjan and Sar-i-Pul provinces and some local Taliban fighters had also agreed to join the hardcore terrorist group.

He claimed Daesh was paying hundreds of dollars to every young man joining the group and the process of recruitment was underway.

Dr. Mohammad Rasoul, a lawmaker from northern Faryab province, said the Islamic State fighters were busy recruiting fighters in the north, asking the government to conduct military operations there.

Senate Chairman Fazal Hadi Muslimyar said security officials should be summoned to the house. He told the two lawmakers to express their concern to the security bosses in the next session.

Earlier, President Ashraf Ghani had claimed defeating Daesh in several parts of the country including Tora Bora by Afghan security forces and that the terrorist outfit was on the run in Afghanistan.
