‘Misogynic lawmakers denied trust vote to Nehan’

‘Misogynic lawmakers denied trust vote to Nehan’

Dec 04, 2017 - 19:07

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Afghan Women’s Support Forum (AWSF) and some lawmakers said misogyny played a role in rejecting Nargis Nehan as minister-designate for the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum by the lower house on Monday.

The Wolesi Jirga today approved 11 ministers-designate except Nargis Nehan, the only female presidential nominee for the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum.

Rangina Kargar, Wolesi Jirga member from northern Faryab province: “Unfortunately Nargis Nehan was not treated good here, the lower house members showed they do not want women to reach a position, this treatment of us is misogynic.”

Hila Arshad, a nomads’ representative in Wolesi Jirga, also said Nargis Nehan was a victim of discrimination.

“Today’s voting represented our colleagues’ misogynic behavior, they stopped a woman from leading a position,” she said.

However, Mariam Kufi, a lawmaker from northern Takhar province, said: “Nargis Nehan probably could not convince lawmakers about her plans and programs, or may be the male lawmakers do not want women to lead that position.”

Meanwhile, Adila Amarkhel, a leading member of AWSF, said, “If it was a matter of plans and programs, the other 11 ministers-designate were also not better than Nargis Nehan.”

She said people’s representatives in the lower house denied trust vote Nargis Nehan because of her gender.
