IEC deputy heads, secretary given extensions illegally

IEC deputy heads, secretary given extensions illegally

Dec 01, 2017 - 07:24

KABUL (Pajhwok): The services of Independent Election Commission (IEC) deputy heads and secretary have been extended for a year in violation of the relevant law.

Under the election law, the IEC chairman is appointed for a five-year period while each of the two deputy chairmen and secretary will have one-year tenure.

In line with Article 11 of the law, the commission’s deputy heads and secretary completed their tenures on 28 Nov 2017, Commissioners should have voted in new elections.

The poll panel recently said in a statement that the election date had been announced but one commissioner was yet to be nominated.

Given the sensitive situation it was in, the IEC argued, it had allowed the three officials to continue in their positions till a new member was named.

Within 20 days of the commissioner’s nomination, the panel promised holding internal elections. It urged the president to nominate the IEC member.

Meanwhile, an IEC official told Pajhwok Afghan News that all activities of the commission would be illegal as long as the panel’s administrative board was not elected.

The three officials were allowed to continue on the recommendation of Vice-President Sarwar Danish, he said on condition of anonymity. The proposal had no legal basis, he concluded.
