KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghanistan has secured the green place in supporting freedom of expression in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

According to a statement from the Ministry of Information and Culture (MoIC) received by Pajhwok Afghan News, a recent meeting of UNESCO organized in Paris discussed the situation of freedom of speech in the globe.

The source said that Afghanistan was taken out of red area to green area in terms of freedom of speech by the organization.

This advancement show that efforts are underway for supporting and protecting the media by the public and the government despite conflicts in Afghanistan, the source said.

Protection of freedom of expression and journalists and eliminating violence against media workers indicate that press freedom is on progress in Afghanistan, the source said.

Fazel Sancharaki, deputy spokesman for the MoIC who represented Afghanistan in the UNESCO meeting in Paris, has said that the joint government and media committee taken serious steps for eliminating violence against journalists.

Journalists Defense Committee head, Abdul Mayeed Hashemi, said that Afghanistan was still not secure for journaklists and media workers.

He said that the government should pay attention to violence and murdering cases of journalists.
