Traditional Loya Jirga can help solve Afghanistan problems

Traditional Loya Jirga can help solve Afghanistan problems

Nov 09, 2017 - 18:46

KABUL (Pajhwok): A number of civil society activists and former government officials in a meeting on Thursday asked for holding a traditional Loya Jirga (Grand Council) for resolving the country problems.

The meeting organized by Afghanistan Youths Association (AYA) was attended by more than a thousand people who announced support for holding the Loya Jirga to help develop understanding which was the only way to steer the country out of crisis.

Ghorzang Seyal, head of AYA demanded conducting a Loya Jirga and said, “We welcome the suggestion of former president, Hamid Karzai, because the current government has no will for resolving the country problems which increase with each passing day,”

Hamid Karzai has also suggested that a Loya Jirga was important to discuss and find solution to problems of the country.

Ahmadullah Alizay, President Ashraf Ghani’s advisor and former Kabul governor, who also attended the meeting, said, “We are not against the government, we want dignity for our people, only the traditional Loya Jirga can  solve our problems,”

Afghans lose their lives on daily basis which is no longer acceptable demanded the ongoing conflict to end.

Talking to people, he said, “I assure that no one should fear, we would reach a permanent peace if the traditional Loya Jirga organized,”

Alizay voiced on militants to stop killing their ‘brothers’ who he said were victimized by the ongoing conflict.

Abdullah Mohammadi who represents Samangan people in Wolesi Jirga, also stressed on holding Loya Jirga and said security situation was worsening in Afghanistan and people did not feel safe even in the country’s capital.

Afghan forces’ casualties have increased under the leadership of national unity government, it is a matter of concern for people, he said.

Bilateral Security Agreement (BSA) with the United States should be also discussed because this agreement is proved as useless so far, Mohammadi said.

Abdur Rahim Ayubi, a lawmaker from Kandahar province and head of Afghanistan United Party, said, “Don’t’ worry, holding Loya Jirga is not for collapsing the government or organizing a coup, but it is for resolving current crisis of the country,”

Calling the government incompetent and illegitimate, he said, “This government faced the country with crisis and violated the constitution, it has no the ability to provide resources for holding Wolesi Jirga election, so a Loya Jirga is needed to address major problems of the country,”

Ayubi also criticized the BSA and said, “The US’s wrong policies caused Afghanistan to turn to a war ground and proxy competitions,”

“We do not know why the US gives its military equipments to Pakistan and not to Afghanistan who the agreement is signed with,” he said.

Referring to the growing casualties of Afghan forces, foreign countries’ interferences, Pakistan’s rocket strikes on Afghan soil and fencing the Durand Line by Pakistan, he said, “I want to know what should be done to address these major issues.”

A number of other participants of the meeting also stressed on holding Loya Jirga for finding solution to problems of the country. They asked the government to pave the ground for organizing this council.
