Kandahar exports dry, fresh fruits worth $51m

Nov 09, 2017 - 18:24

KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): Dray and fresh fruits worth $51 million has been exported from southern Kandahar province so far this year, an official said on Thursday.

Abdul Baqi Bena, head of the Afghanistan Chambar of Commerce and Industries (ACCI) for Kandahar province, said over 11.5 tonnes of dry fruits had been sent a abroad from Kandahar during the ongoing year.

Beside dry fruits, fresh fruits were being exported to Pakistan and India the most, he added.

“Export conditions to Pakistan are easy compared to other countries where packing of fruits on international standards is not considered the most important thing,” he said.

According to Bena the establishment of India-Afghanistan air corridor was another step which boosted the export of Afghanistan.

He added the export of fruits by air was more economical compared to the ground route.

By air the cost one kilograms of fruits was accounted for 20 cents and the delivery took only few hours. While by land the cost of one kilogram was accounted for 60 cents and it took days to reach the destination.

A fresh fruit trader, Haji Abdul Ahad, said currently they relied on Pakistan for exporting their products. Most of the benefits of Afghan products go to Pakistani traders, who use their own trademarks on Afghan fruits.
