Rice exports to Afghanistan: Tax waiver demanded

Rice exports to Afghanistan: Tax waiver demanded

Nov 06, 2017 - 08:43

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Exporters have demanded the withdrawal of a 1.5 per cent withholding tax (WHT) on purchasing profit margin to promote rice exports to Afghanistan.

Imposition of the tax had caused a fall in rice exports worth $1 billion, the All Pakhtunkhwa and FATA Commercial Exporters Association claimed on Sunday.

Increased rice imports into Afghanistan from Tajikistan and India through Chahbahar and Bandar Abbas ports highlighted the negative effect of the tax, the association argued.

Abdul Rauf Shah, the association’s chief, told reporters the Federal Board of Revenue had sent notices to more than 30 exporters and their bank accounts had also been frozen due to non-payment of the tax.

If it genuinely desired ramping up rice exports, the government should create one-window facility for the exporters, he said, adding they could not produce purchase letters.

Asking the authorities to simplify trade procedures to promote employment opportunities, he said blocked bank accounts of exporters should be unfrozen forthwith.
