20 Taliban dead in Ghazni, Paktika clashes

SHARANA/GHAZNI (Pajhwok): Twenty Taliban militants have been killed during overnight clashes with security forces in southeastern Paktika and southern Ghazni provinces, officials said on Thursday.

Ten Taliban and two police were killed during a firefight last night in Tarmerai area of Argun district in Paktika, provincial police chief Brig. Gen. Mohammad Azim Hashmi said.

He told Pajhwok Afghan News scores of militants were wounded in the clash that erupted after insurgents stormed security posts in the area.

A resident of Tarmerai area, Mujahid, said the clash between militants and security forces broke out late in the night and lasted four hours.

He said he saw three bodies of policemen at the clash site in the morning.

In Ghazni province, militants have suffered casualties during clashes with government forces in two districts --- Andar and Deh Yak.

Ghazni governor’s spokesman Mohammad Arif Noori told Pajhwok that three Taliban gunmen were killed and five others wounded by security forces in operations in Malangi and Murad areas of Andar district.

He said three motorcycles belonging to the rebels were also destroyed during the offensive.

According to Noori, six rebels were killed and several others wounded in operations in Deh Yak district.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said nothing about the incident in Deh Yak district, but said an aircraft bombed the house of an Afghan local police member in Andar district, injuring a child and a woman.

He denied the fighters suffered casualties in Andar district.
