Senator Asakzai punished for punching colleague

Senator Asakzai punished for punching colleague

Oct 29, 2017 - 19:12

KABUL (Pajhwok): Meshrano Jirga member Rahmatullah Asakzai was barred from attending house sessions for a month on Sunday over beating a colleague at the Senate’s hall.

At Sunday’s meeting of the upper house, some lawmakers stressed convening of a traditional loya jirga but others said the move would be ineffective in the country’s current situation.

Senators Syed Safiullah Hashimi, Farida Kochi and some others said a Loya Jirga should be called into session for resolving the current crises of Afghanistan; However, Nisar Ahmad Haris, Abdul Latif Nohzatyar, Gulalai Akbari and several others opposed the idea.

Senator Rahmatullah Asakzai from Kandahar province said many problems in Afghanistan went unnoticed, adding the Durand Line was gradually being recognized as an international border.

Mohammad Hanif Hanafi, a representative from Uruzgan province, said: “A Loya Jirga in current situation isn’t a fair move and those demanding a Loya Jirga are spy-agents and their demand is based on orders from others.”

Hanafi wasn’t finished yet when Asakzai abruptly hurled a water bottle at him and then rushed towards him and punched him a few times in the face and head.

Some senators intervened and separated the two and after it Asakzai was expelled from the house at orders of the Meshrano Jirga chairman.

Hanafi said Asakzai attacked him for no reason and threatened if the house didn’t take steps to restore his dignity, he would take action himself and he had the ability to defend his reputation.

Chairman Fazal Hadi Muslimyar said attacking Hanafi by Asakzai without a legitimate reason blackened the reputation of Meshrano Jirga and brought under question the dignity of the house.

He ordered subjecting Asakzai to the “disciplinary regulation”.

Mualvi Mohiuddin Munsef, who heads the Senate’s legislative affairs commission, told reporters after the session that based on the ‘disciplinary regulation’ Asakzai would be denied a month salary and not allowed to enter the Meshrano Jirga for one month.
