Ghani praises footballers, promises scholarships

KABUL (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani has encouraged young footballers and promised to arrange 100 scholarships for in the next three years.

A statement from the Presidential Palace said President Ghani met with leaders of the country’s football sport and athletes from Shaheen Asmayee and Da Maiwand Atalan clubs at the Presidential Palace on Saturday mooring.

Mohammad Yousuf Kargar, technical assistant for Afghanistan football, talking on behalf of the Afghanistan Football Federation, thanked the president for his attention and support to sportsmen of the country.

“Our football athletes have been able to earn big achievements in national and international games and introduce a new face of Afghanistan to the world, these all achievements were due to the president’s support and great leadership,” he said.

He said the Afghanistan Premier League (APL) comprising eight teams from the eight zones sent the message of ‘One Nation One Voice’ and solidarity, unity and friendship.

Kargar was happy about football’s development and said it was for the first time in decades that the sport was facilitated with an international standard and floodlighted stadium. The Afghan players no longer needed to travel to foreign countries and rent stadiums for exercises, he added.

Sayed Mohammad Hashemi, the captain of Shaheen Asmayee team and Faiz Mohammad Faizi, the captain of Da Maiwand Atalan, also talked and thanked the president for his support and encouragement.

They said despite problems Afghan football athletes had good achievements. They said economic problems of the athletes need to be resolved.

Ghani congratulated the winners of APL championship and appreciated organizers of the league, AFF and football athletes for their achievements.

“You are a positive example of our new and next generations and the final tournament of APL is the will of a nation that they would never surrender to threats,” he said, while talking to the meeting.

He said the Afghan government supported sports particularly football and developments in the game over the past few years was appreciable.

“Sports need a national program and we should prepare a five-year plan in this regard in the next six months”, Ghani said.

The president was happy over Shaheen Asmayee team’s participation in the Asian Games on behalf of Afghanistan and said: “The government is ready to take needed measures and provide needed facilities to football players in Asian Games.”

He promised the government would offer 100 scholarships to football athletes in the next three years.

Ghani also stressed elections at AFF should be held based on international norms and without interferences.
