Heavy storm leaves 1 dead, 4 injured in Jawzjan

Oct 18, 2017 - 16:37

SHIBERGHAN (Pajhwok): At least one person was killed and four others wounded in traffic accidents triggered by a strong storm in the capital of northern Jawzjan province, officials said on Wednesday.

Mohammad Reza Ghafoori, the governor’s spokesman said, the storm lashed Shiberghan city from the northwest, starting yesterday evening till midnight.

“The storm was so severe drivers were unable to see the road, which caused three traffic accidents in separate areas of the city, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to four others.”

Ghafoori also said the injured people had been evacuated to hospital and were under treatment.

The governor’s spokesman confirmed some people had suffered financial losses as well due to the strong, but he had no exact figures.

Jawzjan public health director Dr. Fraidon Habib said security forces transferred four injured people to the civil hospital last night and a fifth one had died before reaching the hospital.

The four injured people included a woman, said Dr. Habib, adding one of the injured was in critical condition and under intensive care.

In neighboring Baghlan province, residents complained about the dusty storm, saying they were forced to close shops and not to attend jobs and schools.

Last night’s storm which affected residents of Faryab, Sar-i-Pul, Jawzjan, Balkh, Samangan, Baghlan, Takhar and Badakhshan provinces was said to be unprecedented in recent years.
