Onion price skyrockets as harvest down in Samangan

Oct 15, 2017 - 19:01

AIBAK (Pajhwok): Due to decreased harvest, the price of onion has increased by more than 10 times compared to its last year’s rate in Hazrat Sultan district of northern Samangan province.

Humayoon Habib, Samangan agriculture director, said farmers cultivated onion on 750 acres of land last year, but this year they cultivated the vegetable on 600 acres.

The farmers collected 5,500 tons this season compared to 6,800 tons last year.

Habib said the price of onion was 10 times higher than last year’s for being exported to Pakistan.

Khan Sherin, a resident of the area, said he sold seven kilos of onion for 150 afghanis and the same quantity was sold for 20 afghanis last year.

His one acre of land produced 7,700 kilos which he sold for 120,000 afghanis.

Ali Mohammad, another farmer, said he collected 16 tons of onion from his two and a half acres of land. he sold seven kilos of onion for 140 afghanis a few days ago. He said the increased price would meet his family’s needs.

Reports suggest the price of onion increased after the product was exported to Pakistan. The prices of water melon, melon, almond and pistachio have also increased, compared to last year’s.
