KABUL (Pajhwok): The National Environmental Protection Authority (NEPA) on Tuesday said Afghanistan was among 14 countries of the world being affected by the climate change.

NEPA Head Mustafa Zahir told reporters here on the occasion of International climate Change Week that soaring temperature was one of the characteristics of climate change which had become worldwide issue and hampered living things.

He added last March was the hottest month in the history of Afghanistan according to statistics.

Zahir said melting of glaciers had bad impact over the environment, agriculture and living items on the surface of earth.

Second Vice President Sarwar Danish said climate change had become a grave issue and change for the world. He said geological factors, human efforts and different other reasons direct or indirectly linked to the climate change.

According to Danish soaring temperature, deforestation, excessive use of burning materials such as coal, crude oil on large scale and illegal excavation were main reasons behind the deteriorated environment.

The second vice president said Afghanistan’s production of carbon dioxide was nothing compared to the world, but even then Afghanistan was one of the countries badly affected by the climate change.

He said according to the NEPA findings, water resources, forest, meadows, agriculture and health sector had been badly affected by the climate change phenomenon.

He urged the authorities concerned such as the ministries of agriculture, public works, rural rehabilitation and development, mines and petroleum and others to make joint efforts and get together in tackling the environmental issue.
