ACB appoints Dean Jones as interim head coach

ACB appoints Dean Jones as interim head coach

Oct 10, 2017 - 11:27

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) on Tuesday announced appointing former Australia batsman Dean Jones as interim head coach for the Intercontinental Cup in Hong Kong.

The ex-Australian great would coach the national team during the tour of Hong Kong for the Intercontinental Cup fixture, ACB spokesman Fareed Hotak told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He hoped Jones' appointment would be useful for the national team, saying the ACB and Dean Jones would decide on a long-term coaching contract after the Hong Kong tournament.

Cricket expert Rahim Gul Sarwan viewed the ACB choice as positive, hailing Jones as a famous player, with a long and variegated cricketing experience. The Australian has played good cricket in many countries.

Afghanistan has been without a coach since August when the board chose not to renew Lalchand Rajput’s contract after he had a year-long stint with the team.

Jones, 56, recently covered the Shpageeza Cricket League, Afghanistan’s premier T20 competition, in Kabul as a commentator. His style of commentary made him popular with the Afghans.

The former right-handed batsman and spinner has also played first class games for his county as well as 52 Tests and 164 One-Day Internationals.

He was a good commentator and coached the Islamabad United team for the Pakistan Super League (PSL). He has also coached the Australian squad.
