Sep 27, 2017 - 10:25

KABUL (Pajhwok): US Defense Secretary James Mattis and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg flew in to Kabul on Wednesday for talks with senior Afghan leaders.

Mattis will meet President Ashraf Ghani and other cabinet members, a source in the Presidential Palace confirmed to Pajhwok Afghan News.

On his first trip to Kabul after the announcement of America's new strategy for Afghanistan, the secretary is also expected to meet Resolute Support mission commander Gen. John Nicholson.

After formal talks, Mattis would give a joint media briefing with Ghani and the NATO secretary general.

In August, President Trump rolled out the new US policy to win the war in Afghanistan. He outline a regional approach to eradicate terrorism and stabilize the situation in Afghanistan.

The NATO chief would also hold talks President Ghani and Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah, as well as other high-level officials. Discussions will focus on the NATO-Afghanistan partnership, including the ongoing NATO-led Resolute Support mission.

According to a statement from the alliance, the secretary general will address Resolute Support troops and meet members of Afghan civil society.
