PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Iran and Pakistan, seeking a politically negotiated settlement of the Afghan conflict, have called for regional solutions to regional problems.

The call came at Pakistani Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif’s daylong visit to Tehran, where he met President Hassan Rouhani and his Iranian counterpart Dr. Javad Zarif.

At the conclusion of Asif’s trip, the Foreign Office said the two ministers agreed there was no military solution to the Afghan conflict and a politically negotiated settlement was imperative for lasting peace there."

In a statement, the ministry said regional countries had vital stakes in stability in Afghanistan and should play a more proactive role in stepping up peace efforts.

Rouhani stressed greater cooperation between Tehran and Islamabad in fighting terrorism and safeguarding borders. Creating border markets would help Iran and Pakistan, he added.

Security and regional stability was important for Iran and both countries shared the same views on resolving regional problems, the Iranian president was quoted as saying.

Last week, Khawaja Asif visited China, which stoutly supported Pakistan's position that continued efforts for a politically negotiated settlement in Afghanistan were needed.

He will meet his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session. He will also consult Turkey's leadership on the situation in Afghanistan.
