MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has closed its office in Mazar-I-Sharif, the capital of northern Baklh provincem following the murder of a staff member.

A day earlier, a man with disability shot dead a female physiotherapist with the humanitarian organisation. Lorena Enebral Perez, 38, a spanish citizen, helped people, including children, who had lost their limbs.

An officer of the hlobal organisation based in Mazar-I-Sharif, who wished to go unnamed, confided to Pajhwok Afghan News that their office was shut today (Tuesday).

The office would not reopen until security was ensured for ICRC staff the source said, refusing to give further details regarding the decision that might affect many war victims.

Sher Jan Durani, the provincial police spokesman, said the ARCS had not formally complained about security threats to its office. “It is our responsibility to ensure security for all foreign and domestic organisations."

With seven rehabilitation centers in Afghanistan, ICRC manufactures more than 19,000 artificial limbs annually and treat hundreds of thousands of patients across the country.
