JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Provincial officials on Wednesday rang a school bell to kick-start the new academic year in eastern Nangarhar province, where half of the schools have no buildings.

But officials, who attended a ceremony in this regard at the Bibi Hawa High School here, said 50 schools in every district would get buildings during the ongoing fiscal year.

Governor Gulab Mangal, education officials and other provincial government officials were present on the occasion.

Education director Syed Esa Sadat said there were a total of 900 schools in Nangarhar and 405 of them had no buildings, retaining walls, drinking water and other facilities.

He said 800,000 students, including 300,000 girls, were imparted education in the province and 80,000 new students would be enrolled this year.

Sadat added 38,000 students from internally displaced families were enrolled last year and the process would continue this year.

He said the distribution of stationary, flours, boards and other necessary items had been started and requirements of all schools would be completed.

H added 12 schools in five insecure districts remained closed while as many previously closed schools had been reopened in the past one week and efforts were underway for the reopening of other schools.

He said the closed schools were situated in Pachirawgam, Achin, Haska Mena and Nazyan districts.

Governor Mangal assured that efforts would be made for the reopening of closed schools.

He called on militants not to use schools as bastion and let the educational institutes function.
