18 suspects detained over drug smuggling: CJTF

KABUL (Pajhwok): Police have detained 18 individuals over drug smuggling charges in various provinces of the country, officials said on Wednesday.

The anti-narcotics police also seized 500 kilograms of drugs and 1,100 liters of alcoholic drinks from the detainees, said Khalid Moahid, spokesman for the Criminal Justice Task Force (CJTF).

He told Pajhwok Afghan News the suspects were arrested in Kabul, Balkh, Badakhshan, Nangarhar, Samangan, Uruzgan and Faryab proivnces in the past one week.

Five of the suspects had swallowed more than 2.5 kilograms of narcotics and wanted to smuggle the substance to India but they were arrested at the Kabul International Airport, he said.

In total more than five kilograms of heroin, more than 263 kilograms of opium, 266 kilograms of hashish, 1,127 liters of alcoholic drinks, 19 telephone sets and six vehicles were seized from the 18 detainees, Moahid said.

Their cases have been sent to CJTF prosecution office for further investigation, he added.

According to CJTF, 60 drug cases involving 59 people including an Iranian national have been addressed from across the country after reaching it.
