JALALABAD (Pajhwok): The administrative affairs of Mandol district in eastern Nuristan province have been controlled from neighboring Nurgram district for the past 16 years, residents say.

They claim so far no road was constructed to connect Mandol district with the provincial capital, Paroon. However, officials say a road has been recently extended to the district.

Nuristan provincial council head, Sadullah Paindazoi, told Pajhwok Afghan News after the US invaded Afghanistan in 2001, Mandol officials operated inside the district for just one year and now it had been 16 years the district’s affairs were managed from Nurgram district.

He said the absence of officials inside the district had created many issues for local residents. “Mandol people have many times complained to us and we have conveyed their voice to the authorities in the provincial and central governments, but to no avail.”

The public representative called insecurity a major factor behind little development in Mandol district in long years. He said residents faced serious issues  in Mandol where other works were also at a standstill.

Pajhwok tried to have comments of local residents in this regard; however, the area lacks telecommunication services and therefore a contact was not established.

Nuristan Governor Hafiz Abdul Qayoum said facilities were being provided to reactivate government departments in Mandol. “The area has no infrastructure and road; thus, we have to carry out works through relocation. But we have been making efforts now to reactivate services at specified areas.”

The governor said budget for reconstructing the Mandol district centre building had been approved and work on it would be launched next solar year.
