Aug 16, 2017 - 23:17

JALALABAD (Pahwok): A rocket hit participants of a funeral gathering, killing one person and injuring five others, all from the same family, in Surkhrod district of eastern Nangarhar province on Wednesday.

The incident took place in Fatehabad area of the district in the evening when Taliban militants attacked a passing convoy of the Afghan army, an official in the Surkhrod district administration said.

The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told Pajhwok Afghan News during the clash, a rocket fired by the Taliban hit participants of a funeral ceremony. He said the injured included a woman.

A member of the victim family, Faqir Mohammad, also accused the Taliban of firing the rocket that killed the man whose family and relatives were mourning the death of a newborn baby boy.

He said a woman and four men were wounded and the deceased child’s father was killed in the rocket strike.

The Taliban, who have stepped up attacks in various parts of the country, have so far said nothing about the latest civilian casualties blamed on them.

Also on Wednesday, a large number of people protested in the capital, Jalalabad, against the alleged killing of 16 civilians in a US airstrike last week in the Haska Mena district.
