KABUL (Pajhwok):  The Catholic Relief Services (CRS), a humanitarian group, on Tuesday confirmed the killing of its three local workers in western Ghor province, saying so far 12 aid workers have been killed in Afghanistan this year.

A woman was also wounded in Monday’s attack on the CRS workers, but it remained unclear whether she worked for the NGO.

Dr. Richard Peeperkorn, acting humanitarian coordinator for Afghanistan, in a statement said:  “I am deeply saddened by the shooting and killing of three staff members of CRS in Ghor Province.”

He extended condolences to friends and families of those killed and said the attack highlighted challenges aid workers faced and sacrifices they made when working in Afghanistan.

“Since the start of 2017, twelve (12) aid workers have been killed and as many injured whilst delivering their programmes to those in need.”

Aid workers in Afghanistan provide emergency trauma care, run nutrition feeding programmes for malnourished children, and assist families displaced by conflict and natural disasters.

"I call on all parties to ensure that those providing humanitarian assistance have safe access to the most vulnerable and can carry out their lifesaving work unhindered,” Dr. Peeperkorn added.
