KABUL (Pajhwok): The NATO Senior Civilian Representative (SCR) Ambassador Cornelius Zimmermann has said that education was the recipe to eradicate terrorism, said a statement from the alliance on Sunday.

Ambassador Zimmermann expressed the view during a meeting with students from the American University of Afghanistan (AUAF) on the occasion of International Youth Day.

The NATO SCR was welcomed by Dr. Kenneth Holland the President of AUAF and M. Ershad Ahmadi, the Vice President for Development. He met a group of about 20 students and alumni.

The envoy was very inspired by the stories the students shared. Two of them were present during the attack against the University in August 2016. He was impressed by their courage and determination to carry on with their studies. "Education is the recipe to eradicate terrorism," said Ambassador Zimmermann to the students.

The NATO SCR talked about the role of NATO in Afghanistan highlighting the Resolute Support Mission but also NATO's contribution to the financial sustainment of the Afghan security forces, and the political dialogue and practical partnership between NATO and Afghanistan.

He then invited the students to ask questions, which led to an insightful exchange of views about governance, security in the country, relations with the regional neighbours, and the prospects for peace in Afghanistan.

In conclusion, Ambassador Zimmermann encouraged the students to take on responsibilities, telling them, "you can contribute to building your country according to your convictions."
