12 policemen, 17 Taliban killed in Helmand clashes

LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Twelve policemen have been killed and nine others wounded in a Taliban attack in southern Helmand province, a reliable sources said on Saturday.

According to the source, the insurgents launched coordinated attacks on police check-posts in Nawa district, killing 12 policemen and injuring nine others.

Governor Hayatullah Hayat confirmed the overnight attacks but put the police fatalities at five. He said reinforcement had reached the site, killing 17 Taliban in a counterattack.

Three policemen and four Taliban were injured in the overnight gunbattles, which was recently wrested back from the militants, the governor added.

Meanwhile, the Taliban confirmed the clashes. The group spokesman, Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, said 15 policemen were killed as the militants captured two check-posts.

Separately, seven Taliban were killed and several wounded in an overnight raid by security forces in Greshk district, said Maj. Mohammad Rasoul Zazai, spokesman for the 215th Maiwand Military Corps.

He said three weapons, three walkie-talkies, 10 bags of landmines and ammunition were recovered during the raid. But the Taliban have not yet commented on the raid.
