Millions lost as fire guts Kabul fruit market

KABUL (Pajhwok): A fire gutted 35 shops selling fruits and vegetables in central capital Kabul on Tuesday, as the losses were estimated at about 10 million afghanis.

Allah Mohmmad, a shopkeeper at the market in the limits of 4th police district, told Pajhwok Afghan News that it remained unclear how the roof of a shop caught fire that quickly engulfed other shops.

He said the fire brigade arrived at the scene in 20 minutes after the fire had erupted. The fire was extinguished as of 2pm.

Noor ul Haq Nazir Omari, head the National Workers' Union of Afghanistan, told reporters at the scene that the fire caused 10 million afghanis loss to traders.

Farooq Hasas, 4th police district chief, who was present at the market, told media that the reason behind the fire was not known yet, but they were investigating. He said no one got hurt in the fire and the damage would be assessed later.
