JALALABAD (Pajhwok): As many as 260 families of slain police officials were provided cash assistance at a ceremony in eastern Nangarhar province.

In compliance with a presidential order, the cash assistance to the families of the fallen policemen from the four eastern provinces, Nangarhar, Kunar, Nuristan and Laghman, was provided by the Ministry of Interior.

Police chief Abdul Rahman Rahimi told the cash distribution ceremony at the Nangarhar police headquarters that the total cash aid amounted to 50 million afghanis.

He said the aid was being distributed to 260 families and each family would receive 200,000 afghanis.

He said the same families had been distributed land plots by the municipality departments and each family had deposited 35,000 afghanis for acquiring the land plot.

The families said they were happy with the assistance, but asked the government to review the residential scheme for the families of the martyred policemen.

Habibullah, whose young police brother was killed in the conflict, told Pajhwok Afghan News that 900 applications for the land plots had been rejected and the money returned to the applicants.

Sultan Mohammad, whose police son was killed in a battle with insurgents in eastern Nuristan province, said he would return loans to people his family borrowed from after the death of his son.
