South Africa A tour: Aussie boycott makes way for Afghans

KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghanistan will join South Africa and India for a tri-series starting later this month as Australia have boycotted the series, a news report said on Monday.

Australia pulled out of a development tour of South Africa as a result of a pay row between its players and board, Reuters reported, saying talks between the union and Cricket Australia were deadlocked.

Led by Usman Khawaja, Australia's 'A' were scheduled to play two four-day matches and a 50-over triangular series against India and South Africa.

Cricket South Africa Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat said in a statement: "We are delighted that Afghanistan have accepted our invitation and look forward to welcoming them to our country for the first time,"

"They are a passionate cricket nation and I expect the Afghanistan A team to compete strongly against our A team and India A in the upcoming tri-series," he added.

Afghanistan, along with Ireland, became full members of the International Cricket Council (ICC) last month when they joined the 12 elite nations playing Test matches.

Reuters quoted Afghanistan Cricket Board Chief Executive Shafiqullah Stanikzai as saying: "We are very pleased to accept Cricket South Africa's invitation to participate in the upcoming triangular series."
