ZARANJ (Pajhwok): Civil society activists and youth representatives on Wednesday protested in southwestern Nimroz province against Iran’s president recent remarks about construction of dams in Afghanistan, saying Tehran was clearly interfering in Kabul’s internal affairs.

The protesters shouted slogans “our water is ours” “water is our honor and dignity” “we support construction of dams.”

Mohammad Bahram, a civil activist, told Pajhwok Afghan News they would defend Afghanistan’s water resources.

He said the 1973 Helmand water treaty with Iran should be fully enforced.

Then Iranian prime minister Amir Abbas Hoveida and Afghan prime minister Mohammad Musa Shafiq signed the in 1973 that determined the specific amount of water that should flow into Iran: 26 cubic meters of water per second.

President Ashraf Ghani has many times said the Helmand water treaty was in the interest of the Afghan people and peace in Afghanistan and its implementation was a priority of the government

Mustafa Baloch, who participated in the protest in Zaranj, said the Iranian president’s recent statement was 'an obvious' interference in Afghanistan’s affairs, calling for the problem to be solved peacefully.

Iranian leader Hassan Rouhani has criticized construction of several dams in Afghanistan like Salma dam, Kamal Khan Dam and Kajaki dam and said his government could not stay silent on construction of the dams because the structures blocked water flow in rivers.

Similar protests have been carried out in other parts of the country against Rouhani’s remarks which also drew condemnation from Afghan lawmakers.
