WI may call back star players ahead of Afghanistan tour

WI may call back star players ahead of Afghanistan tour

May 21, 2017 - 15:36

KABUL (Pajhwok): The West Indies may call back senior players to the One Day International (ODI) squad ahead of the limited over series with Afghanistan, reports say.

Courtney Browne, chairman of the West Indies Cricket Board Selection Committee, hinted at revisiting the selection policy, ESPN Cricinfo reported.

Currently, the WICB follows a stringent policy of considering only those players who have featured in the domestic 50-over competition. The policy going back to 2010 was put in place under the regime of Julian Hunte and Ernest Hilaire.

The current criterion has ruled out a bunch of senior players, including Dwyne Bravo, Chris Gayle, Lieron Pollard, Sunil Narine and Andre Russel.

Earlier, the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) announced that Afghanistan would play three Twenty-20 and as many ODI during their tour in May/June this year.

It would be the first time the Afghan squad would be playing the West Indies in a series on Caribbean soil. The Afghans were one of the 12 teams that took part in the 2010 ICC World Twenty20 Tournament and have since made steady progress in the game.

“We are looking forward to welcoming the Afghans to the Caribbean for this short series,” said WICB Manager for Cricket Operations Roland Holder.
