Afghan forces drive Taliban from Qala-i-Zal

May 16, 2017 - 17:01

KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): Security forces on Monday claimed recapturing the Qala-i-Zal district of northern Kunduz province from Taliban militants.

The rebels, who captured the strategic town nearly two weeks ago, were pushed back early in the morning by joint security forces as part of “Operation Pamir-5” to wrest back Qala-i-Zal district, the 20th Pamir Military Division said in a statement.

Brig. Gen. Abdul Malik Karimi, 20th Pamir Military Division commander, who was present at the district centre, told reporters that the Qala-i-Zal district had been recaptured and the Taliban were on the run.

He said Special Forces Unit had been deployed at the district and that militants had torched all important documents.

The operation was underway. A Pajhwok reporter, who visited the district entre, said security forces had entered the district building and had launched a combing operation.
